 Workholding

Like most things surrounding the metalworking industry the term Workholding has evolved to describe a multitude of items or devices for securing something to something else.

Certainly in terms of securing a billet of material to a machine chuck, table or pallet system to allow machining to take place, the term workholding relates to the “workpiece” being “held” in-situ. However the tool itself has to be secured in a toolholder to physically machine the billet; therefore these devices are also referred to as workholding devices.

Further understanding is needed as a result of modern technology and even modern terminology with the increase of “multi-task” or “multi-function” machine tools that expand the possibilities for one-hit completion of component parts, pushing the boundaries for machining to the limit of the imagination which may require closer attention to workholding in general with the right level of investment set aside.
