- To be able to perform a thread milling operation a machine tool must have three-axis control to be able to interpolate helically. This means the tool must rotate in a circular rotation around its own axis whilst orbiting around the bore circumference or workpiece. When the tool orbits it must also move vertically one pitch length. These movements with the tool geometry create the required thread form.
As with thread turning there is more than one option for producing milled threads. Radial approach thread milling also uses the plunge method, is the easiest way to produce a thread milling programme, but has its limitations.
The tangential arc approach requires more programming but produces cleaner threads, is softer cutting, vibration free and works with harder materials, and produces the highest quality threads, again whether solid tools or indexable tools are employed.
