- The Health and Safety Executive have issued new guidelines surrounding the use of fluids within the metalworking industry, bringing greater awareness to employers of the potential hazards involved such as dermatitis, occupational asthma and bronchitis, however, companies already have a legal requirement to assess risks in the workplace and to reduce these risks to be as low as is practical.
Metalworking fluids (MWF’s) come in many forms from non-water miscible neat cutting oils to complicated water miscible emulsions, and they provide numerous benefits amongst other things lubrication, chip flushing and workpiece cooling.
Other MWF’s include de-watering and rust preventative fluids selected for their properties regarding product cleaning and mid-long term storage, with numerous manufacturers having vast ranges of products to choose from.
But with increasing environmental issues causing legislative changes to the use of certain elements in the manufacture of MWF’s, which has adverse consequences in product performance and also concerns the disposal of contaminated fluid, the need to select the right product is clearly relevant.
For free, detailed independent advice on the use, handling and storage of MWF’s check out the website
http://www.hse.gov.uk/ or contact your local Jemma engineer.
Simple fluid management can be carried out by users of MWF’s to maintain the quality of the fluids they are using by standard
practises, to assist in monitoring and maintaining machine sumps reducing costs through less disposal.
